In some cases, handy home or business owners are able to perform one small part of the garage door replacement process on their own: Measuring the previous door to get a proper understanding of the dimensions you require in your new garage door. Let’s go over everything you’ll need to know here, from the materials required to a few important measurements, including a couple you may not have considered.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
For starters, you need a couple very basic materials that should be present in virtually every home and commercial building. You’ll want a tape measure with a reasonable length, plus a small step-ladder to make sure you can easily access everything. Finally, ensure you have a pen and paper or some other writing source to take down measurements.
MEASURING WIDTH AND HEIGHT
Your first measurements taken should be the simplest: The width and height of the door. For width, you want to be sure to record the measurement based on the widest possible point of the garage – go from the middle of the left side of the finished opening to the opposite right side, using feet and inches as your measurements. If you need someone to help you stretch the tape measure this far across, ask for help.
For height, you’ll once again want to prioritize the highest point and the lowest point. Ensure the floor is level in the area where you’re measuring, and use feet and inches.
SIDE MEASUREMENTS
From here, it’s time to measure the gap between the side door opening and the ends of the garage space. You’ll measure the width from the opening on their side to the end of the garage on the side. You want there to be at least 3.75 inches if you’re going to install a vertical door track for your new door. If you’re considering a double car door, you’ll need at least 10 inches of space for a center post.
HEADROOM MEASUREMENT
The space between the top of the garage door and the ceiling is called headroom, and this is another measurement you should take using your stepladder. This measurement relates to how the door rolls up and down on its tracks when it’s opening and closing.
BACKROOM MEASUREMENT
Finally, backroom refers to the distance from the garage door opening to the back of the garage. This is the depth of space the door has to retract back into when it’s open, requiring at least the door height plus 18 inches in the case of electric garage doors (15 inches for some manual lift doors).
